Descent angle: the green-holding number nobody checks

The descent angle that holds a green rises with your speed, from about 41° up to 46°.

Two 7-irons can carry the same 160 yards and behave completely differently on landing. The difference is descent, or land, angle: come down steeply enough and a mid-iron with reasonable spin takes one bounce and stops, while shallower than that it skids and releases, and your perfect approach finishes over the back.

The number most golfers quote, 45°, is really a range that moves with your speed, and the engine encodes it that way. The green-holding floor runs from about 46° for a 7-iron above 90 mph of club speed down through 45, 44, and 43° as speed drops, reaching roughly 41° for the slowest swings. It is also a window, not just a floor, because a mid-iron can land too steep and balloon as well as too shallow. For reference, a tour 7-iron comes down near 50°, well above the minimum, so 45° is the line that holds a green, not the standard tour flight.

Descent is built from two things, apex height and spin, and the engine reads them as one diagnosis rather than two. If a longest iron already lands steeply enough, its shallow neighbor is usually an apex-and-spin problem on that one club, not a set-wide fault. When the numbers do fall short, the fixes sort by both cost and effect. A urethane-cover ball is the cheapest, worth about 300 to 500 rpm more 7-iron spin than a firm ionomer, though ball depth is its own topic.

By effect, though, the main equipment lever is the head. Lower-CG, higher-launching iron designs add apex height without asking you to swing harder, and that is the largest stopping-power move on the rack. A higher-launching shaft profile can help too, but it ranks below the head and stays swing-dependent, which is why we label it a direction to test rather than a spec to order from numbers alone. Delivery changes sit last, powerful but slow.

Here is the honest caveat, and it is a real one. The 45° target assumes you have the speed to reach it. Below roughly 85 mph of 6-iron ball speed, the physics simply will not produce a tour-style descent no matter what you buy, and chasing the number is a losing game. The answer there is more loft in hand: easier-launching game-improvement designs, and hybrids or lofted woods replacing the long irons that cannot climb.

That last point is where descent turns into a bag-composition question. When it is your longest iron specifically that cannot reach the floor, you are no longer fitting a flight, you are deciding whether that club has earned its slot, which is the hybrid-versus-long-iron crossover.
