What each fitting change actually moves (the honest levers table)

Independent measurements of every fitting lever, and the noise floor any change must beat.

Fitting advice sounds precise; measurement is humbler. The best-documented lever is loft: one degree moves launch about a degree and spin 400 to 500 rpm, reliably, for everyone. Almost everything else is smaller, or personal, or both. Swapping driver heads moves total distance 4 to 10 yards in player testing, and the entire current market spans only 10 to 12 yards between the longest and shortest model on center strikes.

The useful way to sort the rest is by whether the direction holds for everyone or depends on the golfer. Some levers are systematic, predictable without knowing who is swinging. Add loft and everyone gains launch and spin. Raise a head's MOI and everyone keeps more ball speed on a mishit, about 5 to 8%. A degree of wrong lie pushes everyone's mid-iron roughly 4 yards offline, more as loft climbs. A firmer or softer ball moves greenside spin far more than driver spin, around 4,000 rpm of spread near the green against 850 off the tee. Those you can call in advance.

Other levers are individual, and their direction cannot be read off a spreadsheet. Shaft flex steps average only 2 to 5 yards, yet one golfer's best-fit flex was worth 16. A 10-gram shaft-weight change gave one responder 23 extra yards and gave another a 36-yard dispersion improvement, in unrelated directions, with no rule for who gets which. Tipping stiffens feel for everyone but sends spin up for some and down for others. Swingweight trades a little club speed for feel, with the best point different for nearly every tester, and driver length adds only about a mph and 2.3 yards per inch on center, its effect on accuracy genuinely disputed. These are real variables; they are simply not chartable.

That split is why our advice is bounded the way it is. A prescription may not claim more than its lever's measured effect, and any lever whose per-golfer direction is individual is capped at medium confidence from numbers alone. It is the reason shaft guidance stops at a starting class and a direction to test rather than a serial number, and grip size stays a tweak: the honest ceiling on that advice is lower, so the label says so.

Everything above sits on a floor. Even a repeatable swing scatters about 5 yards of carry and 6 of line, and two independent studies reached those exact figures, which is why we trust the number as the smallest delta a short session can prove. Above the floor sits the single biggest variable of all, and it is not equipment: a half-inch off-center strike costs 5 to 7% of distance on irons and woods, with vendor figures reaching 15% on a driver. That routinely exceeds the fitting change being measured, which sets the order of operations. Strike first, loft second, head class third, everything else verified on a launch monitor.

One last point, because credibility is the whole purpose of a levers table. Most of these numbers come from independent robot or panel testing rather than manufacturer claims, and where a figure is fitter consensus or a vendor estimate instead, the text says so, conditions attached. And some things were left out on purpose: center-of-gravity millimeter constants from a single blocked source, the yardage claims on draw-bias heads, and any hard per-inch off-center number, each encoded as a range or not at all. Robot deltas are ceilings rather than promises, because a robot cannot tell you whether you will strike one head more centered than another. Read the table as the honest maximum, then verify on your own numbers.
