Why your fairway wood is two different clubs: the tee and the deck
The same head, same swing, and same golfer launch very differently off grass than off a peg.
A fairway wood leads a double life. Off a tee it behaves like a small driver: the ball sits up, the strike finds the middle of the face, and the numbers look flattering. Off the deck the margin collapses, because the ball sits at ground level and the bottom half inch of face is suddenly in play. In the one published test that hit the same head both ways, the deck cost about 3 degrees of launch and added roughly 800 rpm of spin, with the sideways miss growing to several times its teed size.
The mechanism is worth understanding, because it explains why the fix is strike before loft. A fairway face is not flat: it curves from sole to crown, a design feature called roll. Catch the ball low on that curve and the strike is effectively de-lofted, so launch drops. At the same time, vertical gear effect on a low strike adds backspin. That pair, lower launch and higher spin from one cause, is the signature this engine looks for, and it is the reason turning the hosel cannot fix it. Loft moves launch and spin in the same direction together; a low strike moves them apart.
The diagnosis is cheap to confirm. Hit a handful of shots off a low tee and a handful off the deck with the same club. If the teed shots launch several degrees higher and spin visibly less, the club is fine and the strike is the variable. Foot spray makes the same point in one range session: the marks off the deck will sit lower on the face than the marks off the tee, usually by half an inch or more.
What actually helps off the deck is loft and geometry, not a hotter face. A 5-wood or 7-wood presents more loft to the same strike, launches from lower on the face without stalling, and lands steeply enough to be useful. This is why fitters so often move players out of the 3-wood for deck work and keep the 3-wood, if at all, as a tee club. The fairway wood's face materials matter less than marketing suggests: fairway heads sit below the driver's rebound ceiling, and the few yards a hotter face can add are small next to the ten to twenty that strike and loft move.
One honest limit: the published tee-versus-deck test changed balls between conditions, so its exact numbers overstate the pure lie effect by some amount. The direction is not in doubt, the size is approximate, and no vendor publishes amateur fairway-wood launch data below roughly 85 mph at all. Where the windows on your report are extrapolated, the report says so.
