Launch windows: why your optimal launch isn't the tour's

Optimal launch depends on your speed and your attack angle, not a universal number.

Carry-efficient launch is a moving target rather than a fixed figure. At 110 mph with a positive attack angle, about 11° is plenty; at 85 mph hitting slightly down, you need closer to 14 or 15° to keep the ball airborne long enough to carry. Copy a tour player's launch at amateur speed and you leave yards on the ground.

The pattern underneath is steady: the slower you swing, the higher you should launch. Optimized launch runs roughly 15.5° at 80 mph, 13.4° at 90, 12.1° at 100, and 10.5° at 110, all measured at a level strike. Loft is the direct lever, since a degree of loft buys about a degree of launch, which is why the adjustable hosel is the first thing to try before anything with a price tag.

Attack angle is the hidden variable beneath those numbers. Hitting up lets you launch high with low spin, the distance recipe, while hitting down at the same loft lowers launch and adds spin. That is why downward hitters typically need 1 to 3° more static loft than upward hitters at the same speed, and why two golfers with identical club speeds can be fitted into very different heads.

This is also why we ask whether you want to optimize carry or total distance, because the two want different flights. Take 90 mph at a level strike. The carry-optimized window sits near 13.4° of launch and about 3,100 rpm, holding the ball up for a soft landing, while the total-optimized window drops to roughly 10.8° and 2,500 rpm for a flatter flight that lands shallow and runs. Firm summer fairways reward the lower, running flight; soft conditions and forced carries reward the higher window.

It helps to know what being on the wrong side of the window costs. Launch below your target loses carry directly, because the ball never climbs high enough to use its speed. Launch too high, usually with too much spin riding along, does the opposite: the flight climbs, stalls, and lands steep with little roll, and it turns worse in wind, where the extra height gives the breeze more to push against. The window has two walls for a reason, and missing either one gives yards back.

One honest note about the inputs. Many range monitors never measure attack angle, so when it is missing we assume a slightly downward −1.5°, the amateur norm, and build your window from there. Add a measured attack angle from a bay session and every launch target tightens around your real swing instead of an average one.
