Optimal driver numbers by swing speed (and why the charts disagree)
Your optimal launch and spin depend on your speed, and the two best-known sources don't fully agree.
There is no single optimal driver flight. At 85 mph, a carry-efficient ball launches around 14 to 16° with enough spin to stay up; at 110 mph the same job wants 10 to 13° and well under 2,500 rpm. Copy a tour player's numbers at amateur speed and you fall out of the sky before the ball finishes.
Here is what most chart articles skip: the authorities disagree, and not by a little. TrackMan's 2010 optimizer, built for maximum carry, wants about 3,100 to 3,300 rpm at 90 mph. The windows modern fitters and MyGolfSpy publish, built on today's balls and heads, want closer to 2,400 to 2,700 at the same speed. That gap is real, and it comes from two things: equipment has moved on since 2010, and the two charts optimize different goals, pure carry versus playable total distance.
Rather than crown a winner, we encode both and show a blended window. The modern band sets the floor. The ceiling is drawn between that band's top and the 2010 grid's center, so the window respects current gear without discarding the older carry data. Your attack angle then shifts the pair, about 80 rpm and roughly half a degree of launch per degree, and the carry figures are scaled up about 7.5% to match what modern equipment actually produces. What you get is a range built for your exact speed and angle, with the disagreement left visible instead of averaged away.
The single most useful number in all of this is what the average amateur leaves behind. TrackMan's average male hits down 1.6° at 93.4 mph and carries 204 yards. The same swing optimized, launched higher with less spin, carries about 228. Those 24 yards are the famous ones left on the table, and they are why two golfers with identical club speeds can need completely different lofts. Our engine reports its own version of the gap conservatively, so the figure you see runs a few yards under the raw optimizer number rather than over it.
It is worth being precise about what improved since 2010, because it sharpens the spin story. Peak face speed has been fixed by rule since 1998, and independent robot tests put the best and worst current drivers only 10 to 12 yards apart on center strikes. So the technology that pushed the spin windows down is mostly the ball, not a faster driver head, whatever the model-year ads say.
It also helps to see how far tour numbers sit from yours, because they are the ones most often copied by mistake. A PGA Tour driver averages about 113 mph of club speed, 10.9° of launch, and 2,686 rpm to carry 275 yards. Read those as evidence that the flight is speed-specific, not as a target: the same launch and spin at 93 mph would land well short of your own optimized window.
