Shaft fitting from numbers: what's real, what's personal
Group tests show tiny average differences between shafts, and large unpredictable individual ones.
The most important shaft study for an online fitting to be honest about: MyGolfSpy put eleven manufacturer-nominated 'lowest-spin' driver shafts in front of eight single-digit players. The group-average spread between the highest and lowest spinning shaft was about 100 rpm, or one quarter of a degree of loft. But for individual golfers, the same shafts swung spin by 300–1,000 rpm and carry by 9–18 yards. The shaft matters. Which shaft is unknowable from a chart.
The details sharpen the point. That group spread was 104 rpm, and about 4 yards separated the most and least accurate shafts on average. Inside those calm averages, single golfers moved 333 to 1,076 rpm between shafts. A swing of 1,076 rpm is what you would expect from roughly 3° of loft. Carry moved 8.7 to 18.3 yards per player, and left-right dispersion moved up to 32. Averages say shafts barely matter. Individuals say the opposite. Both are true, and only one of them is about you.
Weight tells the same story with better numbers. In a five-tester panel, a change of roughly 10 grams bought one golfer 23 yards of distance and tightened another's dispersion by 36 yards, while the direction refused to generalize: only three of five launched lower with the lighter shaft, and three of five spun less. A peer-reviewed study agrees on the direction problem, finding that 22 added grams moved 10 of 12 golfers essentially 0 mph. Then there is the famous line that golfers feel weight more than flex, where six of seven testers did. That result deserves its asterisk. It is one seven-golfer driver study, quoted so often it reads like three independent confirmations.
Tipping, which means trimming the shaft's tip to stiffen it, measures about 5 CPM per inch. Call it half a flex. In the controlled test all five golfers felt the change and the flight refused to cooperate: two spun lower (the two slowest swingers), two spun their highest, and two were significantly less accurate with the stiffer tip. One physics point most marketing skips is that a shaft moves launch and spin together, because forward bend adds dynamic loft and dynamic loft raises both. High launch with low spin is a head property, not a shaft property. Flex letters compound everything. There is no industry standard, roughly 10–12 CPM separates flexes inside one brand, one brand's stiff overlaps another's regular, and made-for stock versions measure softer and slower than their aftermarket namesakes. In matched trials the true aftermarket shaft was faster in 9 of 10, by an average of 1.36 mph.
Length belongs on this list too, because its folklore runs in both directions. The measured reality is modest: an inch of driver length is worth about 1 mph of club speed, roughly 2.3 yards, on center strikes only. The legacy claim of 3 mph per inch is marketing. Accuracy is genuinely disputed and we encode it that way. A five-golfer test found nobody most accurate at 44 inches, while a 22-golfer test watched fairways hit collapse from 74% to 38% between 44 and 46 inches. Shortening helps some players, especially steeper and less repeatable deliveries, and does nothing for others. One catch settles many cases: longer clubs get struck off-center more often, a half-inch miss costs 5–7% of distance, and in one test a 44.5-inch build out-totaled the 46-inch once mishits were counted.
So our shaft advice stays deliberately bounded. Speed sets a starting flex band and weight class, flight problems suggest a profile direction, and the confidence label stays low or medium, because the measured truth is that shaft response is personal. A fitting bay with a launch monitor settles in twenty minutes what no spec sheet can.
