Smash factor: the contact-quality number
Ball speed divided by club speed: how much of your swing actually reaches the ball.
Smash factor is ball speed divided by club speed, a measure of how much of your swing actually reaches the ball. About 1.50 is the practical driver benchmark, with tour players averaging 1.48 to 1.49 and the average 14-handicap sitting near 1.44. Every hundredth below that is ball speed you generated and then left at impact.
It is worth knowing where the ceiling comes from, because it is a rule rather than a law of physics. The face can only rebound the ball so hard, and since the late 1990s the rules have capped the coefficient of restitution at 0.830, which puts the maximum legal driver smash near 1.495. So 1.50 is not a wall that collision physics built. It is one the rulebook drew, and every conforming driver already lives just under it.
For fitting, a low smash factor means the priority is strike, not specs, because nothing on the face costs more ball speed than missing the center. A half-inch off the middle drops distance by 5 to 7% on an iron and up to about 15% on a driver, which routinely exceeds whatever a new head or shaft was going to add. That is why the engine treats smash as a gate: below about 1.42 it stops recommending gear and calls for contact work first, since a fitting done on scattered strikes fits the wrong swing.
You can see your own pattern in a single range session. One coat of foot spray or face spray gives eight to ten readable strikes, and the marks read like a map: toe contact adds hook spin, heel adds slice spin, low on the face sends spin up and launch down, and high on the face does the reverse. Ten minutes tells you whether you are a heel-striker, a toe-striker, or simply scattered, and each of those has a different answer. Feeding a scattered pattern into a low-forgiveness head only makes the numbers worse.
Two cautions on reading the number itself. Mid-irons run lower by design, with a tour 7-iron around 1.33, because loft trades speed for spin and height, so never compare smash across clubs; compare against the benchmark for that club. And smash is only as trustworthy as the club speed behind it. When your device reports ball flight but not club speed, we estimate club speed from ball speed and label it. A smash factor built on an estimated club speed would just be circular, so the engine sets the smash-based contact check aside on those shots rather than pretend it measured one.
