Swingweight and lead tape, without the folklore
Swingweight is a balance ratio, not a law of physics; useful for consistency, oversold as a fitting fix.
Swingweight, the D2 or C9 scale, measures how a club balances around a point 14 inches up from the grip. It is a heft ratio from the 1920s, not a measurement of what your swing does, and one point works out to about 50 gram-inches. Most golfers cannot feel less than a 2-to-3-point change, though skilled players sometimes catch two.
The builder constants fall out of that balance point. Roughly 2 grams at the head is a point, 4 to 5 grams at the grip is a point the other way, 6 to 9 grams of shaft weight is a point (so a heavier shaft actually lowers swingweight), and half an inch of length is about three points. That is the whole toolkit for moving the number. What moving it does is the more interesting question. In a peer-reviewed study, 18 low-handicap golfers each hit a driver built to three head weights. Adding 26 grams slowed the club about 2.7 mph, yet ball speed held because strike efficiency rose, smash climbing from 1.42 to 1.45. Carry was statistically unchanged, but total distance still fell about 3 to 3.5 yards, and the heavier head arrived roughly 1.5° more open, pushing the resting shot pattern about 19 yards right. The tidy takeaway that heavier is 'more consistent' did not hold: that trend was only a non-significant lean. A separate six-tester panel running D0 to D9 tells the same story from the other side, with the best swingweight landing in a different place for nearly every golfer.
Lead tape earns the same honesty. A few grams change swingweight and feel, and that is all they change. The dose math is worth knowing: half-inch tape runs about half a gram per inch, so a swingweight point takes roughly four inches of it, which means the internet's occasional 'an inch equals a point' is simply wrong. And tape does even less on irons, where the head is already heavy enough that a strip is a small fraction of its mass. The 'heel tape for a draw' effect needs the 10-to-16-gram movable weights of an adjustable driver, set far from the center of gravity, to show up in flight, and even then the roughly 20-yard bias is a manufacturer figure. A two-gram strip is a feel adjustment wearing a physics costume.
Where builders genuinely earn their money is consistency. Matching swingweight, or matching MOI, across a set so every club feels like the same club is worth having. The two methods are close to a wash: a forward-dynamics simulation found MOI-matching ahead only when ball position was held perfectly constant, and once realistic ball-position variation was allowed the edge disappeared. File the whole subject under repeatability, not distance.
