What your Trackman session actually gave you (range vs. bay)
Trackman Range and a Trackman fitting bay are different instruments wearing the same logo.
Trackman Range, the system installed at driving ranges, tracks the ball, not the club. You get ball speed, launch, carry, height, curve, and landing data, all genuinely radar-measured. What you do not get is club speed, attack angle, path, or face numbers, and spin is usually estimated from the trajectory unless the facility uses RCT, or marked, balls.
A Trackman 4 or iO in a fitting bay is the full instrument. It measures everything the range does plus real club data, and on camera-equipped units it reads impact location, the thing that separates 'your driver is wrong' from 'you caught that one off the heel.' Dialed sorts its data-quality grade the same way: a session only reaches the top tier when it carries measured club data alongside spin and a real flight-shape number, which in practice means a bay.
The range has two gotchas worth knowing, and the second is bigger than most golfers think. First, the app's normalize or ball-conversion feature rewrites your numbers to premium-ball equivalents. That is useful for comparison, but the figures on screen are no longer raw measurements, and that rewriting happens inside the Trackman app before any of it reaches us.
Second, range balls themselves corrupt the data, not just the distances. In robot testing against a premium ball on straight strikes, a range ball flew about 12 yards shorter off the driver with roughly double the lateral dispersion, and about 8 yards shorter with a 5-iron. The wedge is the strange one: it actually carried around 4 yards farther, because the range ball spun about half as much and climbed less. So the honest summary is that range balls lose spin everywhere, and where that pushes the carry depends on the club.
The same split extends well past Trackman. Consumer club-data monitors like the Garmin R10 and Mevo Plus do read club speed, so Dialed treats them like a bay for that number, while any ball-only radar leaves club speed, attack angle, and smash factor to be estimated. What matters is not the logo on the unit but whether it actually saw the club, and the tool groups your source into one of those two buckets before it reasons about anything.
None of this makes range data useless, since ball flight is most of what a fitting needs. It means an honest tool has to treat each number according to how it was produced. That is exactly what the measured and estimated badges on your Dialed result are doing: labeling which figures the radar actually saw and which it inferred.
